Cracking the Crab Claw: 20 Career Insights, is an inspirational book written by Scott Keiji Tan, who was a recruiter and now, a career coach in a University.
This book collated some of his encounters and experiences during the course of his work. It is organized beautifully into 4 sections, giving us insights methodically through:
- Discovery;
- Judgement;
- Interview; and
- Wisdom.
Scott Keiji Tan asked, “What is the FLOW that keeps you immersed in what you are doing?”
DISCOVER the V.I.P.S. in you, crystallize your FLOW, giving yourself clarity. And what is this V.I.P.S.?
What is JUDGEMENT? Is non-judgement also a form of JUDGEMENT? Through understanding, we will be able to see from different perspectives, through varying lenses. And Scott Keiji Tan puts it beautifully, “So while it is only human to judge, it is good to make an attempt to put things in perspective. So that we reduce the instances of judging too quickly.“
INTERVIEW often put nerves into people. Many times, we do not know what to expect, even though we may have been well-prepared for it. Scott Keiji Tan’s word of advice, “Enjoy your interview!” By enjoying the process, we will be able to bring out the best in ourselves. He also introduced the S.T.A.R. framework and the Present-Past-Future framework, which gives you a very methodical way to prepare youself for any interviews.
I simply loved what Scott Keiji Tan wrote, simple and clear.
Stripped down to the core, we are all the same. Behind the title and status, there is a shared space in the field. And it is waiting for you to connect the dots.
And I consider this GEM of WISDOM.
